Hamrun is a modern and busy city, with all sorts of shops and businesses. The Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church has San Gorg Preca (1880-1962) buried in its crypt. Dun Gorg, a resident of Hamrun was the founder of the Society of Christian Doctrine which was established at the same Church. After having led a humble life and performed various miracles, he was beatified in 2001 and recognition as a Saint to all effects was granted in 2007.
The first Hamrun Parish, dedicated to St Gaetan, was built in 1875 using a Neo-Gothic style. However the Chapel of Porto Salvo, locally known as Ta'Santu Nuzzo, having a Baroque style which was originally considered as the main village chapel when it was built in 1736. In the 1950s and 1960s, the population in Hamrun started increasing and hence the Church of St. Francis of Assisi and the Immaculate Conception Parish Church were built. The oldest chapel of Hamrun was built in the early 17th Centuart and is dedicated to Our Lady of Atocja, known locally as Tas-Samra.
Hamrun has three Patron Saints: San Gejtanu (St Gaetan), il-Kuncizzjoni (the Immaculate Conception) and San Guzepp (St Joseph). To match this there are three respective band clubs and two Nominal feast days celebrated in this town. The feast of St Gaetan's, is celebrated on the first Sunday after 7th August and it is a spectacular event with celebrations, marches and fireworks that please all attendants. The Immaculate Conception feast, which is celebrated on the first Sunday of July and on the 8th December is a smaller and more quite celebration.
