Swieqi is a relatively new town, situated close to Malta's major entertainment and shopping areas, St. Julian’s and Sliema. Swieqi is sought after place to live because while it is a quiet and peaceful village it is quite centrally located.
The name of this town is derives from the water channels that flowed through the valley over which Swieqi was built. The local council of Swieqi integrates Is-Swieqi, Tal-Ibrag, Il-Madliena and part of St Andrews. Contrary to other older villages this locality has only two places of worship, namely the Ibragg Chapel of Our Lady Immaculate Mother of God (1966) and the Church of Immaculate Conception Mother of the Church, which was made a parish in 1999. The feast on 8th December, is celebrated with a mass and a small procession which is quite a contrast when compared to the older village feast traditions in Malta.
Historical places are mainly located in the Madliena area. The most well-known landmarks are the Victoria Lines, the Madliena Fort, Batteria San Giovanni and the Madliena Chapel dating back to 1880.
