Mosta is one of the earliest places to be inhabited on the Maltese islands, with archaeological evidence dating to pre-history. Mosta is world-famous for its Rotunda: the Parish Church of Santa Marija which has the third-largest dome in Europe and the ninth-largest in the world. This Rotunda has a special sentimental significance for the locals and Maltese Christians as a German bomb which fell on the Church during World War II got stuck in the dome and did not explode, saving hundreds of lives who were part-taking in worship inside the Church. A replica of the bomb is in the Church museum.
Nowadays, Mosta is a relatively busy town although its motto 'Spes Alit Ruricolam' Shows its rural past. You can find all kinds of shops in Mosta ranging from small family owned shops to prime known brands.
